Nearly 50% of Americans Support Legalization of Cannabis
The most recent (April 2011) Gallup poll has found that now more than ever, Americans are in favor of marijuana or cannabis legalization for general use. The number of those who oppose its use has on the other hand reached an all-time low.
It is significant to note that back in the late 60s and early 70s when Gallup started polling the public about cannabis or marijuana, only 12 percent or less supported its legalization. The percentage slowly increased to 28 percent in the late 70s but then followed by a short period of decline into the early 80s.
A major support boost happened in the early 2000s, probably when the medicinal and health benefits of cannabis have been increasingly reported.
Today, approximately 46 percent of Americans support marijuana legalization for general use while 70 percent support its medicinal use.
People between the ages of 18 and 29 are the major supporters of legalizing cannabis while “conservative” Republicans are reported to be the least enthusiastic about its legalization. Men are more likely to support the issue than women, and those who live in Western states are found to be more supportive than those in Midwestern and Southern states.
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the major component found in cannabis, has been shown to possess medicinal and health benefits. One of these is inhibiting tumor growth and killing cancer cells. Cannabis is also known to aid in the treatment of chronic pain, mood issues and delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.
